Standing My Ground-January 16, 2007

The stories contained here are from a book I’ve been working on for way too long now but have decided to turn them into blog stories. They are from my early days post college when I was young, dumb, and full of…Energy ha. Anyways, I was working on a beverage company and doing what I had to do to make money to survive (it was all legal but not exactly mainstream). Names have been changed to protect the innocent, however, names of establishments have remained the same for authenticity sake. I hope you find some amount of entertainment in them. Thanks!

“No, I can’t do that” Mason said firmly in his usual posture which if Napoleon were in the room I could only imagine their two postures would be damn near indistinguishable. His shirt was off showing off his ripped physique(I had to give him credit for that, he was in great shape), his arms were crossed, eyes bugging out of his head piercing me with even more intensity than I was accustomed to from him, with a very stern look on his face.

“We had an agreement and you are now backing out of it. How the hell can I ever trust you?!”

“Things have changed now”

“How? How has anything change?!”

I waited for a response and all I got was the same whiny sigh Mason used whenever he didn’t get his way. Today, it pissed me off even more than usual. I stood up and looked him directly in the eyes.

“Mason, you really better learn how to treat people in your life and you can start with me. You have two choices. You can honor your agreement with me or I’m done. I quit”

I stormed out of the apartment and slammed the door like a spoiled eight-year-old whose mom refused to give him a cookie. I was livid.

After ten months working part-time and six months working full time pro bono for someone I THOUGHT was my business partner Iwas growing more and more disdain for with every passing day. I picked up the phone and called Sam..

“Hey, what’s up dude?”

“You made the right decision, bro.” Sam had turned down the opportunity to come aboard as a partner in the business.

“Oh yeah… well, I hope so. I still question it everyday. Did something happen?”

“Mason’s a dick and I can’t f#cking stand him. It’s like his arrogance and ego both grow with how successful the business becomes. We don’t even have a product to sell, let alone sales, and he thinks he’s the King of CEO mountain.”

“So what happened?”

“We had an ownership agreement and he’s refusing to honor it.”

“That’s so dick.”

“Yeah, I’m glad you didn’t end up getting involved.”

“Nevermind that; you’ve got to get what you’ve got coming to you.”

My phone started to beep. I ignored Mason’s call and continued venting to Sam.

“So, how’s the new job?”

“It’s alright.”

My phone beeped again signally that Mason had left me a voicemail. I decided to hear what he had to say and call Sam back.

“Steve, listen… I need you. Come back and we’ll work this out. I don’t want you upset over this. Call me back.”

I was glad that my point had gotten across to Mason and that he was ready to discuss the situation rationally. I was still too upset to head directly back to the apartment so I stopped to grab a sub. I figured a little food would help me ease my temper.

After slowly eating my sub, I made my way back to the apartment. I walked in to find Mason in his usual posture at his desk staring at his laptop screen. He looked over at me.

“So, I’ve been doing some thinking. You do deserve ownership and it should be the one-third that we’ve been discussing.”

It was at this moment that I finally admitted to myself that I hated Mason. Here he was being reasonable for once in his miserable little life and even whil he was giving me what I rightfully deserved, I was still visualizing what it would be like to punch him square in the face.

“Ok, so what’s the game plan?”

For the next half hour, we outlined what my buy in would be and what percent ownership I would retain.

“That sounds fair,” I said as Mason accepted my hand shake. Despite my growing personal hatred for him, I suddenly trusted Mason a whole lot more.
