The Importance Of Communication In Relationships

People frequently tout communication as the key to a successful relationship, but rarely elaborate beyond that trite statement. When it comes to relationship advice, I constantly find myself repeating the same 3 statements.

1.Figure out what you want.

2.Discuss it with your partner openly and honestly

3.Figure out an acceptable compromise that will make both of you happy It?s that simple.

I?m not promising you will get everything that you want out of your relationship. In fact, you probably won?t. But following that process solves a good majority of relationship issues. The three major problems most couples have seem to revolve around money, trust, and sex.

Communicating with your partner about these issues is crucial to any successful relationship. When it comes to money, there is no need to be embarrassed or emotional. It is not something that defines you as a person and it is not something that should affect your emotional health. I know that people, myself included, frequently conflate monetary value with personal value, but if you can get past that notion and speak about numbers rationally and calmly, you?ll find that many of your concerns can be alleviated. It stands to reason that open communication would build trust, but it is a much harder practice than it sounds.

For communication to really work in a relationship you have to trust yourself, trust your instincts, and be a trustworthy partner. If you are insecure that your partner is attracted to another person or perhaps even cheating on you, share your feelings. It is far better to have an open conversation about why you feel that way and clear the air than it is snoop through their email, no matter how tempting it is. Letting those feelings go unaddressed is not healthy for you or your relationship either.

If you are right, chances are good your partner will feel guilty enough to tell you upon direct confrontation. If they deny your suspicions and you still cannot trust them, there are deeper issues in the relationship that need to be addressed.

And guess what? Communication can help you address those issues in a healthy and productive way! Another area people typically feel unsure or uncomfortable talking candidly with their partner is sex. But being honest with yourself about what you want and being able to openly discuss your desires and boundaries is really the only way to build a healthy and pleasurable sexual relationship.

This goes for any sexual partner, whether you are in a committed relationship or just trying to have an enjoyable experience with someone. The value of communication in your sex life cannot be overemphasized.

It sounds like a simple process to be open with yourself and honest and candid with someone you are in a relationship with, but it can be a lifetime worth of work. The payoff is continuous however, and will effect every relationship in your life, whether romantic or not.
