Memorization tools and techniques for visual learners!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to come back and share another cool technique that I have picked up along the way!

Another technique that I have found that has worked, especially when it comes to memorizing is what I like to call “The power of visualization.” Many times we find ourselves incapable of remembering certain things because we don’t care about them enough. At least that’s what I found my problem to be. I would study something but couldn’t for the life of me remember what I studied because I never made that connection with it. Well I learned to stop being careless and to really think about what I was reading and to actually close my eyes and picture the words that I was seeing on the paper. I know it may sound silly, but I’m a firm believer that it works. All you need to do is really think about the words that you are reading, by doing this you are forcing your brain to function actively rather than passively.

Don’t just read something and expect to remember it but read it, think about, picture it, give it characteristics if you have to, make it important to you and you will notice that you will remember it not only today but tomorrow and the day after…Oh and something I almost forgot to mention…Repetition, don’t just do this once…but revisit what you learned today, tomorrow and the day after using this technique and you will surely come to know it!

xoxo,

mEd ScHooL

P.S. or Disclaimer I should say: These techniques are only meant to help you….if you feel like they are not working after you have earnestly given them a chance then discontinue to use them and find something that is better suited for you, but I am only trying to help anyone who is looking for a better or another way to study more effectively!

Relief for Haiti, Earthquake of 7.0 rocks Haiti and help is desperately needed

Hey everyone…As many of you may have already heard, an earthquake of 7.0 hit the island of Haiti, small Caribbean island found in the western hemisphere yesterday afternoon and it has been said by numerous sources that perhaps thousands have lost their lives, many people are left without shelter, clothing, food, and many are in desperate need of healthcare.

We cannot begin to imagine the toll this has taken on this very small island that has experienced numerous terrible hurricanes in the past and now this. Please say a prayer for those that are there and also for those individuals that have lost a loved one or haven’t been able to get in contact with their loved ones.

There are many people here in the States that have their loved ones living in Port au Prince or in cities near by that have been affected by this terrible tragedy. The things we talk about want to simply take some time and invite anyone that can to please donate whatever it is you can to either the Red Cross www.redcross.org or Wyclef Jean’s organization yele, which more information can be found on his website www.yele.org. Remember we all one race, the human race!

Thanks again,

What do women mean when they say they need space?

Posted by TheAuthor | Posted in All Hottest & Latest Topics, Relationship | Posted on 13-01-2010

Are men and women so different that they can possibly have different meanings for the famous words “I need some space.” Yes many times when a woman’s definition of I need space can be a lot different than a man’s definition of these words. If you have not read the post on what men mean when they need space then go check that post out but for now we are focusing on our women and they mean when they say these words.

Many times when a women is in a committed relationship, very seldomly is she looking for a way to step out, rather many women are looking for a man that is just as committed as she is. Now this is not to say that you don’t have your women players out there looking to have a good time, while trying to hold down a relationship all at the same time but for the most part I want to believe that most women have their man and are looking to keep their man. So if your woman was to tell you that she needs her space, what is she asking you for exactly? This is a definite tough one for the simple fact that most women don’t ever really know what they want.

Space is a word used for women to get you either out of their hair, meaning you might be a little too attached for her liking, space can mean that she needs time to think about what she’s doing with someone like you and whether or not the relationship is worth her time, space can mean that she just needs time to be away from the stresses of a relationship and just needs some “me” time, space can mean that she is trying to get your attention by scaring you into thinking that she might not want to be with you. Space for a woman, can basically mean a whole lot or really nothing at all. So ultimately it depends on where your relationship is.

If your in a relationship and everything seems to be going well and all of a sudden a woman is asking for space then maybe you need to be asking your woman some questions and trying to get done to her real reasons for asking for this space. If things in the relationship aren’t going so well, then as a man you need to definitely get what I like to call “your chips up” meaning you need to be putting in some overtime in your relationship if you are looking for it to work. If a woman is asking you for space then find out what kind of space she’s looking for, maybe she’s stressed out or maybe your doing something that is constantly upsetting her or making her unhappy. If you want the relationship to work, then make sure that you guys have good communication as to why things are the way they are and what it is you both can do to make it better.

How to memorize things faster in medical school, law school or in any school for that matter!

Posted by TheAdmin | Posted in Education | Posted on 10-01-2010

Let me first start off by thanking “The things we talk about” for allowing me to share this article with all of you out there. Over the past year, I have become very fond of this blog and how they try to share all of this information with all of us free of charge at that (love those recipe’s btw), some  of the topics are entertaining, some are informative and some have a more serious tone that not too many bloggers care to talk about, sorry just a quick shout out to one of my fav blogs. Ok enough said with that!

I was granted the opportunity by the admin at “the things we talk about” to write about a few techniques that I have picked up along the way while being in college, undergrad and now in medical school, but  before I even divulge into this topic I  want to let anyone know reading this that this article isn’t necessarily for people in medical school but for anyone in any graduate program, undergraduate program, technical program, high school and we can even go as far as middle school. This article will basically share with all of you some tips that I have picked up along the way that has helped me to learn, memorize and study a whole lot better.

So here it goes:

Let me say that everyone learns things differently, some people are visual learners and other’s may be auditory learners. I found that I myself, was more of a visual learner but I do have some tips for those of you that are auditory learners as well, so stay tune for that.

Ok my visual learners, I don’t know if any one ever told you that making note cards were a complete waste of time, if they did they LIED! Well, let me tell you when and where note cards can be effective and where they may not necessarily work. Notecards can be an essential part of anyone’s learning because it allows you to use a crucial tool that must be a part of your studying, that’s right “REPETITION.” Repetition is indeed key! Now I know what your thinking, note cards take entirely too long, especially when I have a ton of things to learn and no time. Trust me, I know so I found a cool way to create my note cards that actually saved me time at the end. Now this is by no means promoting the apple iphone or ipod touch, but I’m just sharing a cool app that I found invaluable on it, which is called iFLIPR. This app is the ishhhh! I just type in my questions and put in my answers on the website www.iflipr.com and then sync that puppy into my iphone and there you have it note cards on the go. Trust me when I say this does not take long at all. A lot of people I know type a whole lot faster than they write, so this just makes it cake. Oh and not to mention you can have Mozart or Chopin playing in the background while you study!

I hope these tips that I have shared will shed some light for most of you or at least give you some ideas on how you can learn to memorize and study better. I will definitely be writing again for “The things we talk about” so be on a lookout for me,

“mEd ScHooL” that’s what my friends call me! Oh and you can find my posts under the “Education” category. So much more to come, stay tune!

xoxo

P.S. or Disclaimer I should say: These techniques are only meant to help you….if you feel like they are not working after you have earnestly given them a chance then discontinue to use them and find something that is better suited for you, but I am only trying to help anyone who is looking for a better or another way to study more effectively!

JRM Studio Business CardCreating a professional business card using Photoshop

With the way this economy, is going any way to save on business cost will help. Paying someone $120 -$200 to create some business cards for your business may not be on the agenda. Any saving is good saving nowadays.

To start this tutorial you will need the following:

  1. Photoshop CS3 or higher
  2. Instead of creating a business card template, just download the design guideline  from Overnightprints.com by clicking here
  3. You may have to download these fonts: Bauhaus 93, Arcade, Dots All For Now JL

Ok, let’s jump into this tutorial.

Once you have opened the downloaded design guideline from overnightprint, all you need is the frame; just uncheck the folder title “delete these layers ” and now you are ready to start creating your professional business card.

Step 1 Create the background

  1. Create a new layer and call it “card background” .
  2. Select the Bucket tool, and fill in the layer with a background.
  3. To apply the gradient layer style, do the following
  4. Right click on the layer and select blending options to apply gradient filter

  1. Select Gradient Overlay
  2. And choose the following colors from left to right: #1d2d5a,# 1377a6,# dbd9d9,# f0f0f0 then press Enter or Ok, to close out the Layer style box  and you will end up with something like this:
Background for your professional Business card

Step 2: Put in your company logo

Place your logo on the top grey area, aligning it to the left, well, you can have it where ever you choose but for this tutorial, we will have it on the left. And if you don’t have a company logo yet, you can just choose a text font that you like and put your company’s name on the top grey area. I will show you how to create a simple but professional logo in another tutorial.

Step 3: Put your company’s website below the logo,  in the grey area

Step 4: Put your Name, Email, Phone number(s) in the blue area

Step 5: Services offered

The business card doesn’t have enough space to put all the services you can provide to your clients, but you can give them a brief idea. To do this I decided to put only four critical parts.  And to get the effect applied to the web design, business card, graphic design, you will have to reduce the opacity of the text.

To change the opacity of a text you would first select text layer that you wish to change. In this case we will use  the graphic’s text.

1. Select the text that says ”graphic”

2. Then on the top where it’s labeled opacity, decrease the number from 100% to a percentage that best satifies your needs.

You are all done… You are now ready to print your business card with a professional printing business online such as overnightprint.com.

This is the  finished product…
